Next stop was Checotah, Oklahoma, a lovely campground with huge sites and lots of trees! Once out of the desert southwest, the campgrounds started to have a lot more trees, which helped with the heat, but it was still too hot to do much of anything except walk around the campground a little and check out the camp store.

The drive from my previous campground, the Elk City/Clinton KOA, was about 3.5 hours long and very stressful, due to having to drive through Oklahoma City — I hated having to pull the trailer through big cities, with multi-lane freeways and heavy traffic. I would have liked to just get in the slow lane and stay there, but that was impossible as lanes kept dropping off or getting added, and I was always afraid of missing my exit. And poor Mister was getting more stressed out and agitated with every day’s drive. I was really starting to worry about him, not knowing how to settle him down, and with the trip only half over.

I don’t know why KOAs sometimes have two cities in their name when they’re located in an actual third city. The Elk City/Clinton KOA is in Foss, OK. Arrived at around 2:30 PM after a 2.5 hour drive from Amarillo. Although it was a short-ish drive, poor Mister kitty continued to be increasingly agitated about riding in the truck in his carrier. He cried endlessly, until I stopped at a rest area, gave him treats and snuggles and some Rescue Remedy and he finally settled down. I’d tried a Thundershirt on him to see if it would calm him, but it just made him more stressed.

After we arrived and got set up, I took the truck out for gas. Whenever the truck’s navigation directed me to “OK-40”, the truck mistook it for its wake words, “OK Ford,” and it woke itself up. Kept asking me what I wanted but I wasn’t talking to it, it was talking to itself!

Amariilo, TX was only a few hours from my previous campground in Tucumcari, NM, but I’d lost another hour due to time changes and was so utterly exhausted that I couldn’t have handled a longer drive. As it was, I spent most of the afternoon after I’d arrived and set up wandering around in a daze.
