Checotah KOA

Next stop was Checotah, Oklahoma, a lovely campground with huge sites and lots of trees! Once out of the desert southwest, the campgrounds started to have a lot more trees, which helped with the heat, but it was still too hot to do much of anything except walk around the campground a little and check out the camp store.

The drive from my previous campground, the Elk City/Clinton KOA, was about 3.5 hours long and very stressful, due to having to drive through Oklahoma City — I hated having to pull the trailer through big cities, with multi-lane freeways and heavy traffic. I would have liked to just get in the slow lane and stay there, but that was impossible as lanes kept dropping off or getting added, and I was always afraid of missing my exit. And poor Mister was getting more stressed out and agitated with every day’s drive. I was really starting to worry about him, not knowing how to settle him down, and with the trip only half over.

It was once again too hot to really do anything, but I did walk around the campground a bit and was amused by the dog park, with its fire hydrant for “City Dog” and wooden fence post for “Country Dog.” There was a little catch-and-release pond behind the dog park, if you were inclined to do a little fishing.
